What Are Ceramic Fillings and When Are They Used?
Ceramic fillings are the most precise type of dental restoration and are used to repair damage or loss of a significant part of a tooth crown.
They are ideal for teeth that are too damaged for a composite filling to restore effectively but not damaged enough to require a crown. It’s important to note that ceramic fillings are mainly used for posterior teeth, while veneers are preferred for front teeth for aesthetic reasons.
Due to their precision and high quality, ceramic fillings provide long-lasting and aesthetically superior results compared to traditional composite fillings.
How Are Ceramic Fillings Made?
Ceramic fillings are fabricated using CAD-CAM technology in a dental laboratory, allowing extremely precise adaptation to the tooth. The process begins with taking an impression of the prepared tooth, which is then sent to the dental lab. During the fabrication period, the dentist provides a temporary filling to protect the tooth from further damage. The final ceramic filling is then cemented onto the tooth crown. The entire process can take up to 5 days.
Types of Ceramic Fillings
Depending on the area they cover, there are several types of ceramic fillings:
-
INLAY – used for damage located in the center of the tooth crown; the smallest type of ceramic filling
-
ONLAY – larger than an inlay, used to restore damage in the interior of the tooth crown as well as the cusps
- OVERLAY – the largest ceramic filling, covering both internal and external damage; sometimes referred to as a partial crown
