What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are fixed prosthetic restorations that cover a damaged tooth, improving its appearance and restoring strength. They are a reliable and effective solution for teeth that need additional protection and reinforcement, especially when the damage is too extensive for a filling.
Crowns are designed to perfectly mimic the natural shape, size, and color of a tooth and can be placed on either a prepared natural tooth or a dental implant. They are made from high-quality and durable materials such as ceramic, zirconia-ceramic, and metal-ceramic.
Benefits of Dental Crowns:
-
Aesthetic Excellence – closely resemble natural teeth
-
Functionality – restore normal bite and chewing function
-
Tooth Protection – preserve the remaining natural tooth structure
- Durability – with proper care, crowns can last over 10 years
When Are Dental Crowns Used?
-
To protect a cracked or broken tooth
-
To restore a tooth that cannot be repaired with a filling
-
To strengthen a tooth weakened by decay or after root canal treatment
-
To replace an old or failing dental restoration
- As part of a dental bridge
The Dental Crown Procedure
Before placing a crown, the natural tooth must be shaped and prepared to create an accurate mold for the custom-made crown. This preparation is performed under local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience.
After the impression is taken, dental technicians craft the crown, which is first tested during a fitting session. Once the patient and dentist confirm the crown fits and looks perfectly, it is permanently cemented in place—removal afterward is only possible by cutting.
The duration of the entire process depends on the number of crowns and the individual case. If no additional interventions are required, the final crown is typically placed within 7 to 14 days after the initial impression.
