First Specialist Examination for Children

The Foundation of a Healthy Smile

A child’s first visit to the dentist is a key step in maintaining oral health. Early check-ups allow timely detection of potential issues such as irregular tooth eruption, early cavities, or jaw problems.

It is important to make the first examination as pleasant as possible so that the child becomes familiar with the dental office and develops a positive attitude toward oral hygiene. At IMED Polyclinic, our team specializes in working with children, helping them feel safe and relaxed with a gentle and friendly approach.

What does the first pediatric dental check-up look like?

During the first examination, our pediatric dentistry specialist will assess the child’s oral health and risk factors for cavities, as well as evaluate oral restrictions and the function of the oral cavity.

The first visit also includes parental counseling on proper oral hygiene and nutrition, and the creation of an individualized treatment plan. It is important to follow the prescribed plan and bring the child for regular check-ups, even if no current dental problems are present.

Detection of cavity-causing bacteria with microbiological tests

One of the main risk factors for cavities is the presence of cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus Mutans and Lactobacillus. Their concentration in the oral cavity can be determined using chair-side tests. These tests are useful for assessing cavity risk and monitoring changes during oral treatment, while also allowing parents to track the effectiveness of at-home oral hygiene.

How to prepare your child for the first dental visit?

The unknown can be intimidating, so it is essential to speak positively about the dentist and explain what the child can expect. Avoid describing procedures such as drilling or injections, as well as phrases like “it won’t hurt” or “be brave,” since these can trigger fear.

Choose an appointment time when the child is well-rested, fed, and relaxed. You may even create a “safety signal” the child can use to let you know when they need a short break during the visit.

To help your child understand what a dental visit looks like, you can “practice” at home through play, or bring them along to your own dental check-up. During the visit, stay with your child in the office and bring their favorite toy or blanket to help them feel safe and comfortable.
