Incision of the Salivary Gland Duct

 Restoring Normal Saliva Flow

Are you troubled by pain, swelling, and frequent infections of the salivary glands?

If saliva cannot properly drain, it leads to pain, gland swelling, and even infection. The solution is an incision of the salivary gland duct – a minor surgical procedure performed to remove an obstruction in the salivary duct, such as a stone or narrowing, that disrupts the normal flow of saliva.

When is an incision of the salivary gland duct necessary?

The most common reasons for the incision procedure are:

  • Stone in the salivary duct (sialolith)

  • Swelling and pain in the gland during meals

  • Recurrent gland infections

  • Narrowing of the salivary duct (stenosis)

What does the procedure involve?

Salivary gland duct incision is a minimally invasive procedure most commonly performed under local anesthesia. An ENT specialist carefully opens the gland duct to remove a stone or to widen a narrowed section of the duct, allowing saliva to drain freely.

The procedure is short, and most patients can go home the same day.

Recovery is usually quick, easy, and without complications. Mild discomfort or swelling may occur in the first few days, but most patients return to their daily activities within 24–48 hours. Increased fluid intake, a light diet, and maintaining oral hygiene are recommended, along with regular check-ups with an ENT specialist. If pain is present, the doctor may prescribe mild painkillers or antibiotics if necessary.
