Interceptive Orthodontics
Early Orthodontic Treatment for Your Child’s Healthy Smile
The correct position of teeth and proper jaw development are essential factors for functional bite, speech, and overall oral health. Certain irregularities in growth and development can already be noticed in early childhood and, if not corrected on time, may lead to more serious problems later in life.
Beyond improving the aesthetics of the smile, interceptive orthodontics enables timely treatment with the goal of preventing more complex orthodontic and functional anomalies in the future.

What is Interceptive Orthodontics?
Interceptive orthodontics is early orthodontic therapy focused on guiding the proper growth and development of children’s teeth and jaws. The goal is to allow the jaws to develop in harmony and to their maximum genetically determined potential, while eliminating harmful habits such as lip biting, thumb sucking, infantile swallowing, and mouth breathing.
When is Interceptive Orthodontics Used?
It is most often applied in children between the ages of 6 and 10, during the mixed dentition stage when both baby teeth and permanent teeth are present. This is the ideal time for intervention because jaw growth can still be guided, and the therapy has no relapse.
Problems Addressed by Interceptive Orthodontics:
-
Jaws that are too narrow or too wide
-
Uneven jaw growth
-
Crossbite, open bite, or deep bite
-
Excessive spacing between teeth
-
Incorrect tooth position
-
Harmful oral habits affecting jaw development (e.g. thumb sucking, mouth breathing)
Myofunctional Therapy
Myofunctional therapy is used in children as early orthodontic treatment to eliminate harmful habits on time. The therapy consists of wearing a series of removable trainers for a few hours a day and overnight, combined with specific exercises.
It is the only type of orthodontic treatment with no relapse and an excellent preparation before fixed orthodontics (if later required).
Space Maintainers
Space maintainers are devices needed after the premature loss of baby teeth.
Their goal is to prevent the loss of space for permanent successors and to maintain arch width, avoiding crowding that would later require fixed orthodontic treatment.
How to Recognize if Your Child Needs an Orthodontist?
The need for orthodontic treatment is clear when there is visible jaw asymmetry or noticeable overlapping, rotation, and crowding of teeth. However, there are also additional indicators to watch for.
If you notice that your child has difficulty closing the jaws properly, chewing, mouth breathing, or speech problems, it is recommended to schedule a preventive orthodontic check-up.
Early orthodontic treatment not only prevents the need for more complex procedures in adulthood but also provides the opportunity for a healthy, properly aligned smile and a significantly improved quality of life from early childhood.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Intervention
-
Prevents more serious orthodontic problems in the future
-
Simplifies and shortens later orthodontic treatments
-
Improves chewing and speech function
-
Guides proper jaw growth and development
- Reduces the need for extraction of permanent teeth later on
