Otomicroscopy and Ear Toileting
Otomicroscopy and ear toileting are modern methods of examining and cleaning the ear that allow precise insight into the condition of the ear canal and eardrum.
At IMED Polyclinic and Day Hospital, we use the most advanced specialized microscope and instruments that are gentle for patients, making the procedure safe, painless, and far more effective than cleaning the ear independently at home.

What is Otomicroscopy?
Otomicroscopy is a modern diagnostic method used to thoroughly examine the external auditory canal, eardrum, and middle ear. The examination is performed using a specialized microscope that provides high magnification and clarity, significantly greater than that of a classic otoscope.
Thanks to high resolution and lighting, this method enables the ENT specialist to precisely detect even the smallest changes on the eardrum – including inflammations, perforations, cerumen (earwax), secretions, foreign bodies, and other pathological contents.
What is ear toileting?
Ear toilet is a medical procedure used to clean the external auditory canal from accumulated cerumen (earwax), pus, or foreign bodies. The procedure is most often performed with the help of otomikroscopy, ensuring maximum safety and precision.
Head of the ENT Clinic
Prim. Katarina Đurić Vuković, MD, is a specialist in otorhinolaryngology with a subspecialization in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck. She specializes in diseases of the nose and sinuses and has extensive clinical experience in ENT diagnostics as well as outpatient and surgical treatment.
When are Otomicroscopy and Ear toileting recommended?
These procedures are recommended in cases of:
-
Blocked ear or reduced hearing
-
Unpleasant sensation of pressure or “underwater” sound
-
Frequent ear infections (acute or chronic otitis)
-
Discharge or pus from the ear
-
Preparation for audiological examinations or ENT procedures
-
Foreign bodies in the ear
- Maintaining ear hygiene for hearing aid or earplug users
Can the ear be cleaned independently at home?
Most methods of self-cleaning the ear at home can be risky and often do not help reduce inflammation. Improper use of cotton swabs, so-called wax cones, or self-irrigation can worsen symptoms and even damage the eardrum. Additionally, excessive removal of cerumen with cotton swabs can lead to dryness and irritation, increasing the risk of inflammation of the ear canal skin.
Among available home methods, only the application of oil or glycerin drops or sprays is recommended, which help cerumen naturally detach from the skin of the ear canal. However, only trained medical staff can safely and effectively rinse your ear and remove the cause of the problem without risking your hearing.
