Otoplasty

Correction of Protruding Ears

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects the shape, size, or position of the ears. It is commonly performed to address issues such as "protruding" or "prominent" ears, deformities, or other aesthetic concerns related to the ears. Otoplasty can be performed on both children and adults to enhance appearance and boost self-confidence.

When to Consider Otoplasty?

While the procedure is often performed on adults, undergoing otoplasty at an earlier age offers twofold benefits.

First, children's ear cartilage is highly pliable, which allows for easier reshaping. Second, the child can experience emotional benefits from the aesthetic improvement, leading to greater self-esteem.

Otoplasty is recommended for adults and children over 5 years old, when the ears are fully developed.

Consultations

Preparation for the procedure includes a consultation with the surgeon who will perform the operation. During this consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your goals and expectations. The surgeon will carefully assess the structure of your ears to determine the best surgical approach.

They will also perform a comprehensive evaluation of your overall health and medical history to ensure there are no contraindications for surgery. This is your chance to ask any questions or express concerns so that you are fully informed before making a decision.

Procedure details

  • Anesthesia

Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia, during which the patient remains awake but does not feel anything in the area affected by the anesthetic.

  • Incisions (cuts)

The surgeon will make small incisions behind the ears, usually in the natural crease where the ear meets the head. These incisions are carefully placed to minimize visible scarring.

  • Cartilage reshaping

Once the cartilage is exposed, the surgeon will gently reshape it to achieve the desired ear shape and position.

  • Stitching and bandaging

The cartilage will be fixed in its new position using sutures. The incisions will be closed with stitches, and the ears will be covered with a bandage for protection and to maintain their new shape.

Recovery after the procedure

After surgery, the head will be wrapped in a bandage to protect the ears and support the healing process in their new position. This bandage is typically worn for several days, after which a special nighttime band may be recommended for several weeks to prevent accidental trauma during sleep.

Patients may experience mild pain and swelling for a few days. Pain relief medication will be prescribed to alleviate discomfort. During the recovery period, it is important to avoid activities that may strain the ears, such as contact sports or wearing heavy items on the head (e.g., helmets).

The final results of otoplasty may not be immediately visible due to swelling, but over time the ears will settle into their new position and the improvement will become noticeable.
