Prevention and Treatment of Dental Injuries
Children are active, curious, and always on the move, which also makes them prone to various injuries – including those affecting the oral cavity.
Dental trauma in children can range from minor knocks and chips to more serious injuries that require urgent intervention. At IMED Polyclinic and Day Hospital, we provide fast and effective treatment of dental injuries, as well as preventive services against traumatic dental injuries in children.

Most Common Dental Injuries in Children
-
Avulsion – complete displacement of a tooth from its socket
-
Luxation – displacement of a tooth from its normal position
-
Fractures – cracks or breaks of the enamel, dentin, or root
-
Soft tissue injuries – cuts and swelling of the lips, gums, and tongue
-
Injury to tooth buds – trauma to baby teeth that may affect the development of permanent teeth
Dental injuries are not only painful and aesthetically concerning but can also have long-term consequences for your child’s health. In case of trauma, it is crucial to act quickly and visit a dentist as soon as possible to prevent further complications.
What to Do in Case of Dental Trauma in a Child?
A dental injury can seem frightening and cause parents to panic, but it is important to remain calm so as not to further distress the child.
If a tooth has been knocked out, try to place it back immediately into the socket it came from. Have your child bite on a tissue to keep it in place and rush to the nearest dental clinic. Do not rinse the tooth or scrape the root surface. Remove only large visible impurities and leave the rest to the dentist. If reinsertion is not possible, place the tooth in cold fresh milk and seek immediate dental care.
In such cases, time is critical – every minute the tooth is outside the socket reduces the chances of successful replantation and healing.
Preventing Traumatic Dental Injuries
Most dental traumas in children occur due to increased activity, such as falls or sports injuries. To prevent dental trauma, IMED Polyclinic offers custom-made sports mouthguards tailored to your child’s scan and occlusion.
Another important preventive measure is interceptive orthodontics – early orthodontic treatment aimed at correcting irregularities in tooth and jaw development and addressing harmful habits (such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing, or infantile swallowing) before they lead to more serious problems.
Treatment of Dental Injuries
At IMED, dental traumas are managed with a multidisciplinary approach involving orthodontists, oral surgeons, and pediatric dentistry specialists. The success of the treatment depends on the extent of the injury and the time elapsed before seeking care, which is why these cases must be considered urgent.
