Initial (non-surgical) phase
The first phase of treatment includes thorough removal of plaque and biofilm above the gum line, as well as root planing and scaling to remove inflamed tissue below the gum line.
The therapy is performed using ultrasonic and manual instruments (curettes). At IMED Clinic, we use the Airflow Prophylaxis Master device with "No Pain" technology, which ensures a painless and highly effective treatment. Great emphasis is also placed on improving the patient’s oral hygiene habits, since the therapy cannot be successful without proper daily maintenance.
After completing therapy, patients are temporarily prescribed antiseptic agents for chemical plaque control. In advanced cases of periodontitis, antibiotic therapy is also applied. It is equally important to manage systemic diseases such as diabetes due to their influence on the progression of periodontitis.
Surgical (corrective) phase
If the desired result is not achieved during the initial phase, the next step is the surgical or corrective phase. In this stage, the dentist uses microsurgical techniques to access the inflamed tissue, remove it, scale the root surface, and, if necessary, apply regenerative materials to stimulate bone and tissue regeneration.
Maintenance phase (recall)
The final phase of periodontal therapy is long-term maintenance. It involves regular check-ups with the periodontist at intervals determined based on disease progression.
A key part of this phase is educating and motivating the patient to maintain proper oral hygiene, as treatment cannot succeed without it. Periodontitis is a chronic disease, and only through cooperation between the patient and periodontist can its progression be slowed or stopped.
