What is Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects the deviation of the septum — the cartilage and bone plate that divides the nasal cavity. The goal of this surgery is to restore normal airflow through the nose, reducing problems with congestion, infections, and snoring, thus improving the patient’s quality of life.

What is Septorhinoplasty?
Septorhinoplasty combines the functional correction of septoplasty with aesthetic nose reshaping. Besides straightening the septum for better breathing, this procedure includes aesthetic adjustments such as hump reduction, narrowing of the nose, or tip lifting to achieve a harmonious and natural facial appearance.
This surgery is recommended for patients who suffer from both functional breathing issues and aesthetic irregularities or deformities affecting their appearance and self-confidence.
What Does the Septoplasty and Septorhinoplasty Procedure Involve?
The procedures are performed under general anesthesia and typically last between 60 minutes and 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the case. Incisions are made inside the nasal cavity, so there are no visible scars.
Deformed parts of the cartilage and bone are reshaped or removed, and the septum is repositioned in the center of the nose. In septorhinoplasty, additional shaping steps are done to meet aesthetic goals. At the end, nasal packing is applied inside the nostrils, and external splints are placed on the nose to maintain its new shape during healing.
After surgery, the patient remains under observation at the IMED Polyclinic Day Hospital for as long as determined by the doctor and anesthesiologist. The exact duration depends on the patient’s health status.
Recovery After Septoplasty and Septorhinoplasty
Mild swelling and bruising are common after surgery and gradually subside within 7–14 days. During this period, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities to promote healing and return to daily life as soon as possible. Full recovery takes several weeks, with the final results becoming visible after a few months.
If breathing difficulties persist, revision septoplasty may be necessary. Septoplasty can also be combined with turbinoplasty or sinus surgery (FESS) to open and clear the sinuses through the nose.
