What is soft tissue regeneration?
Soft tissue regeneration involves harvesting tissue (most commonly from the palate or behind the last upper molar) to achieve the desired thickening of the gums in areas where tissue is missing.
Nowadays, various biomaterials can also be used as substitutes instead of transplants, but the gold standard for regeneration remains the patient’s own tissue.
Indications for the procedure
Soft tissue regeneration is used for:
-
Preparation before implant placement and permanent prosthetic work
-
Facilitating oral hygiene maintenance around implants and preventing inflammation (in situations where there is insufficient keratinized gingiva around the implant)
-
Aesthetic corrections to achieve symmetry and a natural-looking smile
- Covering gum recession (gum withdrawal)
How does the soft tissue regeneration procedure look?
Depending on the indication, the procedure uses a free gingival graft or a connective tissue graft. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is completely painless for the patient. Sometimes swelling or bruising may occur after the surgery, but this is normal and temporary.
Sutures are removed two weeks after the procedure, and during this period the patient should avoid strain and sports activities. It is also important to avoid brushing the surgical site so that the area can heal. In the meantime, instead of brushing, plaque control is ensured using antiseptic agents.
