Tonsillectomy

 Removal of the Tonsils

Frequent sore throats, difficulty swallowing, or sleep problems may be signs that your tonsils are doing more harm than good. When conservative treatment no longer helps, the solution may be tonsillectomy – the surgical removal of the tonsils. This procedure significantly improves quality of life, eases breathing, and reduces the risk of recurrent infections.

What is tonsillectomy?

Tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the palatine tonsils, is one of the most common ENT procedures. Although tonsils are part of the immune system, in many people they become a source of recurring infections, breathing problems, and daily functioning difficulties.

If you experience frequent sore throats, snoring, breathing difficulties during sleep, or permanently enlarged tonsils, tonsillectomy may be the optimal solution.

What are tonsils and what is their function?

Tonsils are lymphatic tissue located on both sides at the back of the throat. Their primary function is to protect the body from infections. They act as filters that recognize and respond to bacteria and viruses entering through the mouth and nose.

However, in some patients, the tonsils do not function properly and themselves become a source of infections.

When is tonsillectomy necessary?

The most common reasons for tonsil removal are:

  • Frequent tonsillitis, especially if occurring more than 5-7 times a year

  • Chronic tonsillitis that does not resolve despite treatment

  • Sleep apnea and breathing difficulties during sleep caused by enlarged tonsils

  • Swallowing problems due to enlarged tonsils

  • Suspicion of abscess or tonsil tumor

What does the procedure involve?

Tonsillectomy is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the tonsils through the mouth without external cuts or scars.

After surgery, the patient is monitored overnight at the IMED Polyclinic Day Hospital and typically goes home the next day.

Our ENT clinic uses modern surgical techniques that allow for faster recovery, less pain, and minimal complications.

After the procedure, you can expect:

  • Sore throat, especially when swallowing

  • Mild fever in the first few days

  • Changes in voice which resolve during recovery

It is important to drink plenty of fluids and eat soft foods such as soups, yogurt, and pureed meals. The doctor will prescribe painkillers and provide detailed home care instructions.
