Tooth Repair and Conservative Dentistry

Modern approach to tooth preservation

Conservative dentistry represents the foundation of modern dental medicine. Its main goal is the preservation of natural teeth through minimally invasive and highly effective methods such as cavity treatment, root canal therapy, fillings, and the repair of dental trauma.

This type of therapy enables early intervention and prevents the development of more serious complications that could lead to tooth extraction or extensive prosthetic procedures.

Cavity Treatment

Caries refers to the damage of hard dental tissues caused by bacteria from dental plaque. These bacteria produce acids that gradually destroy the tooth enamel (dentin) and progress toward the inside of the tooth.

Caries is the most common reason for tooth repair. If left untreated, it can reach the dental pulp and cause serious complications, such as pulp inflammation (pulpitis), purulent infection (abscess), and ultimately – tooth loss.

How is caries treated?

1
Removal of damaged tooth tissue

The first step in cavity treatment is mechanical cleaning of the tooth, carefully removing all decayed tissue to prevent further spread.

2
Placement of filling
3
Restoration of tooth function and aesthetics

Tooth Reconstruction with Fillings

After caries removal, the tooth is reconstructed with a filling. Modern fillings are not only functional but also aesthetic – they perfectly blend with the natural tooth color.

Types of fillings:

  • Composite fillings – the most aesthetically acceptable, ideal for both front and back teeth

  • Glass ionomer fillings – release fluoride and are suitable for children’s teeth and areas near the gums

  • Inlay/Onlay/Overlay – laboratory-made fillings for larger damage

Root Canal Treatment

When untreated caries progresses deep into the tooth, it leads to infection or pulp inflammation, which can cause severe pain, sensitivity, swelling, or even the formation of an abscess. In such cases, a simple filling is no longer sufficient, and endodontic treatment is required.

The most well-known endodontic procedure is root canal treatment. The goal of this procedure is to remove the infected tissue from the root canal, thoroughly clean and disinfect it, then fill it with a special material and seal it permanently to prevent reinfection.

Timely endodontic therapy allows preservation of the natural tooth, which is always a better option than extraction.

Treatment of Dental Trauma

Treatment of dental trauma refers to saving teeth damaged due to trauma. Dental injuries can occur as a result of accidents, falls, or sports injuries. Depending on the severity, therapy may include:

  • Repositioning and stabilizing the tooth (splinting)

  • Root canal treatment if the pulp has been damaged

  • Aesthetic reconstruction of a fractured tooth

  • Replantation of an avulsed tooth (knocked-out tooth)

What to do immediately after a dental trauma?

If the tooth has been knocked out, try to put it back into the socket (if possible) and see a dentist immediately – time is crucial! Do not wash it or put it in water, only remove larger impurities, and leave the rest to the dentist.

If you cannot put the tooth back in place, place it in a glass of cold milk and hurry to the nearest dental office.
