What are Zygoma implants?
Zygomatic implants are special dental implants placed in the zygomatic (cheek) bone when there is no sufficient bone left in the patient’s upper jaw for conventional dental implants.
Unlike traditional implants, which are shorter (8–16 mm) and anchored in the alveolar ridge of the jawbone, zygoma implants are longer (35–55 mm) and are fixed into the zygomatic bone at a 45° angle.
When are Zygoma implants used?
Zygomatic implants are indicated when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw ridge, or when the existing bone is of poor quality. Potential causes include bone resorption, periodontal disease, or long-term denture wearing.
The angled placement of zygoma implants allows them to:
-
Bypass the sinuses
-
Anchor into dense zygomatic bone for greater stability
-
Evenly distribute chewing forces
-
Provide fixed prosthetic restorations without bone grafting or sinus lift
This makes zygoma implants the ideal solution for patients with severe upper jaw atrophy, enabling fixed teeth even in cases where conventional implants are not an option.
How does the Zygoma implant procedure look?
The process begins with a 3D scan of the jaw and a comprehensive clinical examination, where the dentist assesses bone condition.
This is followed by digital planning of implant position to determine angle and depth precisely, ensuring safe anchorage in the zygomatic bone.
